Purple Shamrock is a small plant nursery in Philadelphia city offering potted and hydroponic indoor and outdoor plants.
We have over 20 years of experience growing in the North East US that we would love to share with our neighbors.
Our plants are grown from seed in locally sourced or composted soil.
We compost our own soil with organic materials (Note: We are not certified "organic".) and keep non-organic materials out of compost bin (ex: heavy metals, plastics).
We do not use pesticides or chemical fertilizers, preferring more natural solutions like cinnamon, garlic, vinegar and neem for pest control and compost tea for fertilizer.
We collect rainwater for our outdoor plants and allow mother nature to do the heavy lifting in the spring, summer and fall.
Our plant containers are mostly recycled or repurposed.
Plant cuttings are rooted hydroponically in clean, recycled glass jars.
Seedlings are started in eggshells, coconut coir, peat, or composted soil.
Edible rooted plants are grown in reused #5 plastic planters or containers or terra cotta pots as these are least likely to leach into the soil.
Ornamental plants are rooted using any of the above methods or in grow bags made from recycled plastic.
To keep things fun, we try to find household items like saucers and mugs to use as decorative planters.
Our mission is to promote sustainable, Earth friendly growing practices and provide information to curious growers based on our experience and education.
We want to bring healthy plants to locals and empower them to bring greenery into their homes.
We believe in Mother Nature and try to get back to our roots. In so, we keep our growing practices as sustainable as possible (see "How we grow sustainably" to learn more), and hope to inspire others to do the same.
We are not yet shipping plants as we are still working on sustainable packaging that will ensure safe transport.
We will be at the Food Trust Farmer's Market at the Piazza, Northern Liberties every 2nd Saturday of the month.

Asiatic Lily (perennial)
We have had great success growing lilies in pots on a Philly patio year after year. Keep the bulbs from freezing in the winter by burying them deep in the pot and you will get tall, vibrant white lilies late spring to mid-summer. Each plant will flower one time per season. As the bulb matures, more flowers will bud. Keep moist with plenty of indirect sunlight.

Nasturtiums (annual)

Standard varieties will vine a bit and grow long over a the sides of a planter. In a bright sunny window, Nasturtiums will be happy inside most of the year. Spring, summer and fall, Nasturtiums will thrive outside with lots of water. Somewhat drought to
